Prune does not always allow multiplication of stems

My 3rd curry leaf plant was pruned in July, in order to have new buds to come out. There were 3 new buds, but after several weeks since then, there is only healthy one while the remaining two were wilted and withered.

As I have been advocating to prune the plant to increase number of stems for more harvest and better shape of the plants, it is a shame that I have not been able to do so on one of my own plants, but it is an example of something could happen.
